Subspecies
Probably a Caribbean sister-taxon of Lesser Elaenia (Elaenia chiriquensis). Subspecies chinchorrensis considered possibly a separate species by some authors.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
remota von Berlepsch, 1907 - Islands off Quintana Roo (Cozumel, Holbox, Meco, Mujeres, Culebra Cay), in south-eastern Mexico.
chinchorrensis Griscom, 1926 - Chinchorro Bank (Great Cay), off Quintana Roo (south-eastern Mexico), and outermost cays off Belize (Half-moon Cay, Middle Cay, Glover's Reef).
cinerescens Ridgway, 1884 - Islands of Old Providence, St Andrew's and Santa Catalina, east of Honduras.
caymanensis von Berlepsch, 1907 - Cayman Is.
