Described subspecies improvisus (northern Cauca Valley) merged with hederaceus, as intermediate within western cline; pallidus (eastern Andes of Colombia in Magdalena and northern Meta) and meridae (north-western Venezuela and adjacent north-eastern Colombia) are indistinct, intermediate forms within eastern cline, both treated as synonyms of venezuelensis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • olivaceus Lawrence, 1868   -  Eastern Costa Rica and western Panama.
  • hederaceus Bangs, 1910   -  Panama (eastern from Veraguas), northern and western Colombia (Cauca Valley, western slope and lowlands) and western Ecuador (south to Loja).
  • galbinus Bangs, 1902   -  Santa Marta region of northern Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Olive-striped Flycatcher (Mionectes galbinus).
  • venezuelensis Ridgway, 1906   -  Northern Venezuela and southern along eastern base of Andes to southern Colombia. Also Trinidad.
  • fasciaticollis Chapman, 1923   -  Eastern base of Andes from southern Colombia south to southern Peru and extreme northern Bolivia.
