Vagrant in southern Australian seas.

Habitat
Marine, pelagic and aerial. Open waters of the Antarctic, approaching the edge of the pack-ice in late summer.

Range (Guide)
Eastern Indian Ocean (NB), French Southern Territories (B), Western Indian Ocean (B) (NB).

Amsterdam I, southern Indian Ocean.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 100 (2010) and decreasing.

Endangered.

Food
Cuttle-fish and other marine life, as well as galley-refuse from ships. Rarely crustaceans. Usually procured from the surface.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on Amsterdam Island, in the southern Indian Ocean.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 270 - 280 days.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) which has a narrower dark leading edge to underwing, and Antipodean Albatross (Diomedea antipodensis) which lacks dark marks on bill.
