Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• antipodensis Robertson, CJR & Warham, 1992   -  Antipodes, Campbell and Auckland islands, NZ. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans).
• gibsoni Robertson, CJR & Warham, 1992   -  Auckland Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Gibson's Albatross (Diomedea gibsoni).
