Abundance (Guide)

Extremely rare vagrant to south-eastern Australia.

Habitat
Marine, perhaps pelagic, circumpolar, coastal and offshore waters around islands near the Antarctic Convergence and in the sub-Antarctic Zone.

Range (Guide)
French Southern Territories (B), Heard Island and McDonald Islands (B), New Zealand (B), South Africa, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (B).

Vagrant to Antarctica, Australia.

Unknown to Falkland Islands (Malvinas), St Helena.

Circumpolar, with breeding at South Georgia, islands of southern Indian Ocean and off southern New Zealand.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds November at Iles Crozet and December at South Georgia.

Nest
In a chamber at the end of a freshly re-excavated burrow, unlined, in fine scree, sand, loose sod and moraines. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
1; smooth, matt, white, sometimes becoming discolored; rounded-oval; about 37 x 31 mm. Incubation: about 44 - 52 days; by both sexes. No evidence of replacement laying.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 45 - 55 days.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Peruvian Diving-petrel (Pelecanoides garnotii) and Magellanic Diving-petrel (Pelecanoides magellani).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • georgicus Murphy & Harper, 1916   -  Subantarctic circumpolar regions.
  • whenuahouensis Fischer, JH et al., 2018   -  Codfish Is (New Zealand).
