Vagrant to Afghanistan, Chad (NB), Comoros (NB), Egypt, Ghana (NB), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (E), Mauritius, Morocco, Niger (NB), Nigeria (NB), Oman, Réunion, Rwanda (NB), Sâo Tomé e Principe (NB), Somalia (NB), Spain, Swaziland (NB), United Arab Emirates.

Bulk of population in Rift Valley of eastern Africa; three further more or less discrete populations in Namibia/Botswana, Mauritania/Senegal and north-western India/Pakistan.

A mound of mud. In huge colonies, often in the company of Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus).
