Possible vagrant to Australia.

Habitat
swamp areas near pools, in or near forest or secondary growth, sometimes in more open, well-vegetated wetlands.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam (NB), China (mainland) (B) (NB), Indonesia (NB), Japan (B), Laos (NB), Malaysia (NB), Myanmar (NB), North Korea (B), Philippines (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), Singapore (NB), South Korea (B), Taiwan (China) (NB), Thailand (NB), Vietnam (NB).

Vagrant to Hong Kong (China) (NB), Italy, Mongolia, Palau (NB).

South-eastern Siberia, Manchuria and Japan south to eastern China. Winters from southern China, Indochina and Malay Peninsula to Greater Sundas, Sulawesi and Philippines.

A repeated, rhythmic 'oo oo oo' or 'gup-gup-gup' calls uttered at night in the breeding season' A low, gruff 'wek' uttered in flight.
