Coastal Australia generally, common and widespread in the north and east but less so in the west and south.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 3,800,000 - 7,600,000 (2010).

Status LC
Wetland degradation and destruction, such as drainage, are the main threats. Hunting and trade for medicine may also be of concern.

Usually in small groups often associated with cattle as they graze.

Nest
A platform composed of sticks and twigs, placed in a tree. Usually in colonies with other herons and egrets.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 6; white-tinged green-blue; oval; about 45 x 33 mm. Incubation: about 22 - 26 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 25 days.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ibis (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Africa and Madagascar, south-western Europe to Caspian Sea, northern, central and southern America, from Canada to Guianas and northern Chile, north-eastern Argentina and scattered parts of Brazil.
  • coromandus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Asia, east from Baluchistan to Australia and New Zealand. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Cattle Egret (Bubulcus coromandus).
  • seychellarum (Salomonsen, 1934)   -  Seychelles. Validity of this subspecies is questioned.


Similar Species
Intermediate Egret (Ardea intermedia) which is larger has a longer, slimmer neck, Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) which is similar in size but has a slender, black bill and is longer necked, white morph of Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) which is larger, does not have a buff crown, has a much heavier, horn-colored bill, and is usually solitary.
