Vagrant to Aruba, Ireland, Jamaica, Netherlands Antilles, Portugal, United Kingdom, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Food
Mainly fish. Also, sometimes amphibians and crustaceans.
Voice
A deeep, guttural grunt.
Nest
Composed of sticks located in a tree, on cliff edges or on the ground on islands. Usually in colonies, often with other species.
Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- auritus (Lesson, 1831) - Gulf of St Lawrence to Cape Cod and west to Utah.
- cincinatus (von Brandt, JF, 1837) - Aleutian Is to Alexander Archipelago (western Canada).
- albociliatus Ridgway, 1884 - Vancouver I to Gulf of California.
- floridanus (Audubon, 1835) - North Carolina and Florida south to Cuba.
- heuretus Watson, Olson & Miller, JR, 1991 - Cuba, Bahamas.
