Habitat
Coastal cliffs of the mainland and offshore islands, never more than 10 km offshore, or more than 100m inland. It forages in shallow coastal waters and estuaries, often in kelp beds, among breaking waves or in tidal pools during periods of high tide. It does not forage off sandy shores.

Population
Estimated population is 8,700 (2010) and stable.
Status NT
Human disturbance, predation by fur seals and pollution are the main threats.

Food
Mainly benthic fish, particularly klipfish (Clinidae) and pipefish (Syngnathidae). Also shrimps and isopods.
Nest
A platform of kelp and sticks, lined with finer material, in sheltered areas, on rocks, cliffs, bushes, small trees, and kelp wracks, as well as man-made structures including jetties, the supports of guano platforms, wrecked ships and sometimes moored ships.

2 or 3, occasionally up to 5.
Subspecies
Often considered to be a subspecis of Long-tailed Cormorant (Microcarbo africanus).
No subspecies.
