  Male: General plumage off-white. Black eye-patch. Wings, black. Tail, black. Flank, black mark. Bill, pale grey, tipped black. Feet, blue. Legs, blue. Webbing, tipped black.

Female: General plumage off-white. Black eye-patch. Wings, black. Tail, black. Flank, black mark. Bill, pink, tipped black. Feet, blue. Legs, blue. Webbing, tipped black.

Immatures: General plumage off-white. Black eye-patch, bluer around eye. Wings, black. Tail, black. Flank, black mark. Bill, pale grey, tipped black. Feet, blue. Legs, blue. Webbing, tipped black. In flight, underwings nearly all white except for black margin at tips.

Habitat
Pelagic. Coastal inshore waters. Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest during the breeding season. From 160 - 260 m.

Range (Guide)
Christmas Island (B), Eastern Indian Ocean (B) (NB), Indonesia (NB), Mauritius (E) (B), Seychelles (E) (B).

Vagrant to Australia.

Breeds on Christmas Island and perhaps elsewhere in that region, disperses north to waters off Java. May extend to Australian seas.

Estimated population is 6,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction through clearing and storms during the breeding season are the main threats.

Rare and threatened.

Apparently silent at sea. Noisy at breeding sites, adults uttering deep, loud, resonant clicks.

Large shallow cup of sticks, in a leafy tree, high in the rainforest.

Eggs (Guide)
1; chalk-white; sun-elliptical to oval; 78 - 84 x 51 - 54 mm. Incubation: about 56 - 57 days; both sexes.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 151 days.
