Cackling and ticking sounds uttered during breeding season. Loud wails. Otherwise silent.

Nest
A floating mound of water plants securely fastened to the surrounding vegetation.
Eggs (Guide)
4 - 5; white, but usually stained reddish; ellipsoidal. Incubation: 20 - 23 days; by both sexes.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
grisegena (Boddaert, 1783) - Eastern Europe, western and west-central Asia. Winters from North Sea east to Caspian and Aral Seas.
holbollii Reinhardt, 1854 - Eastern USSR, Manchuria, northern Japan; western Canada, north-western USA. Winters from Japan and Korea through Aleutian Is to California. Also eastern USA, south to Florida.
