Vagrant to France, Grenada, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom.

Nest
A heap of decaying plant material, lying in shallow water or afloat among growing waterplants.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Atitlan Grebe (Podilymbus gigas). May also have hybridized with Atitlan Grebe (Podilymbus gigas).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • podiceps (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Southern and central Canada south to Panama. Winters southern USA, central America, West Indies.
  • antillarum Bangs, 1913   -  Greater and Lesser Antilles.
  • antarcticus (Lesson, PA, 1842)   -  Southern America, from eastern Panama south to south-central Chile and south-central Argentina.
