Subspecies
Validity of subspecies ophryophanes sometimes challenged. Northern most populations sometimes awarded separate subspecies, petrophilus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
petoensis Chubb, C, 1918 - Northern Mexico (from Sonora east to Tamaulipas) south through Central America to Colombia, and west of Andes south to Ecuador.
rufigularis Daudin, 1800 - Eastern Colombia east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and south to southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
ophryophanes (Salvadori, 1895) - Tableland of central Brazil (Piauà south to Mato Grosso, São Paulo and Paraná) and adjacent Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
