Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, dry svanna, urban areas. From sea-level - 1,700 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Vagrant to Grenada.

Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

In a hollow of a tree, unlined.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 2 - 3
Color: brown


Subspecies
Validity of subspecies ophryophanes sometimes challenged. Northern most populations sometimes awarded separate subspecies, petrophilus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • petoensis Chubb, C, 1918   -  Northern Mexico (from Sonora east to Tamaulipas) south through Central America to Colombia, and west of Andes south to Ecuador.
  • rufigularis Daudin, 1800   -  Eastern Colombia east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and south to southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
  • ophryophanes (Salvadori, 1895)   -  Tableland of central Brazil (Piauí south to Mato Grosso, São Paulo and Paraná) and adjacent Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
