Wooded grasslands and open forest, chiefly deciduous dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forest of the plains and foothills. From sea-level - 915 m.

Subspecies
Sometimes awarded separate, monotypic genus, Neohierax. Racial variation slight. Validity of subspecies requires reassessment.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
insignis Walden, 1872 - Western and central Burma, especially in valley of R Irrawaddy.
cinereiceps Baker, ECS, 1927 - Southern Burma (Tenasserim) and Thailand.
harmandi (Oustalet, 1876) - Southern Indochina, in southern and central Laos, southern Vietnam (southern Annam, Cochinchina) and Kampuchea.
