Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, dry savanna.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.

Vagrant to Rwanda.

Southern Ethiopia, Somalia, north-eastern Uganda and Kenya to north-central Tanzania; southern Angola and Namibia to north-western South Africa.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Northern population sometimes separated as subspecies castanonotus, but poorly differentiated, although widely separated geographically.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

castanonotus (Heuglin, 1860) - Southern Sudan and Ethiopia to central Tanzania.
semitorquatus (Smith, A, 1836) - Discontinuously distributed acacia thornscrub of north-eastern and southern Africa.
