Song is a single, lamenting bark repeated frequently, usually at dawn. A cackling call uttered in alarm.

Subspecies
Has been included within Lined Forest-falcon (Micrastur gilvicollis). Sympatric with subspecies interstes of Barred Forest-falcon (Micrastur ruficollis).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Barred Forest-falcon (Micrastur ruficollis) has 2 - 3 tail-bands, yellowish cere and legs, and is proportionally longer tailed and shorter winged.
