Habitat
Hill to upper montane forest, plantations. From 200 - 2,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand.

Southern Burma (Tenasserim) and southern Thailand through Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and off lying islands; northern Borneo.

Arboreal birds, mammals, reptiles. Occasionally bats.

Voice
A high-pitched, rapid 'kek-keek kek-keek' or 'speeoo-oo' descending at the end, uttered in flight. Short, high-pitched squeaks when perched.

Subspecies
Spizaetus nanus, Spizaetus lanceolatus, Spizaetus philippensis, Spizaetus pinskeri, Spizaetus nipalensis, Spizaetus alboniger and Spizaetus bartelsi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) and Spizaetus cirrhatus and Spizaetus floris (Gjershaug et al. 2004) have been transferred into the genus Nisaetus following Haring et al. (2006). Spizaetus africanus and Hieraaetus fasciatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have both been transferred into Aquila, also following Haring et al. (2006); and Hieraaetus kienerii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been transferred into the resurrected genus Lophotriorchis.

Forms superspecies with Mountain Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus nipalensis), Blyth's Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus alboniger), Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus lanceolatus) and North Philippine Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus philippensis).

No subspecies.
