Southern Canada from southern Alberta to south-western Manitoba, south through west-central USA to northern Texas; winters south to northern Mexico.

Habitat destruction and degradation through cultivation, over-grazing and fire, and the controlling of small mammal populations (prairie-dog towns and gopher populations) limiting food resources, are the main threats.
