Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 3,000 m, occasionally to 4,000 m.

Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada (B) (P), Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada (B), Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, USA (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to Argentina, Jamaica.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

platypterus (Vieillot, 1823) - Central and southern Canada to southern USA. Winters south to Brazil.
cubanensis Burns, FL, 1911 - Cuba.
brunnescens Danforth & Smyth, 1935 - Puerto Rico.
insulicola Riley, 1908 - Antigua (Lesser Antilles).
rivierei Verrill, AH, 1905 - Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia (Lesser Antilles).
antillarum Clark, AH, 1905 - St Vincent and Grenada to Tobago.
