Subspecies
Sometimes placed in Asturina. Apparently close to Ridgway's Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi), Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) and, to a lesser extent, Grey-lined Hawk (Buteo nitidus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
elegans Cassin, 1855 - Southern Oregon (north-western USA) to northern Baja California (Mexico).
lineatus (Gmelin, 1788) - Eastern North America, from southern Canada to central USA.
