Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 300 - 3,000 m, occasionally to 50 m.
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru.
Costa Rica and Panama, and locally into western Colombia and northern Ecuador on both sides of the Andes.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2010).

Populations of Ecuador and Colombia have been assigned to separate subspecies, zimmeri , on grounds of differences in size, but this is unsubstantiated.
