Vagrant to Burundi, Liberia, Rwanda.

Senegambia east to Ethiopia, migrating south to Sierra Leone, Cameroon, north-eastern Zaire, Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Forms a superspecies with White-eyed Buzzard (Butastur teesa), Rufous-winged Buzzard (Butastur liventer) and Grey-faced Buzzard (Butastur indicus).
