Habitat
Primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp to upper montane forest. From sea-level - 2,015 m.

Bhutan (B), Brunei Darussalam (B), Cambodia, China (mainland) (B), India (B), Indonesia (B), Laos (B), Malaysia (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Philippines (B), Sri Lanka (B), Taiwan (China) (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Bangladesh.

Nest
A structure of sticks in dense foliage in a tall tree.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 2; white.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Sulawesi Goshawk (Accipiter griseiceps).

The following 11 subspecies are recognised:

  • layardi (Whistler, 1936)   -  Sri Lanka.
  • peninsulae Koelz, 1949   -  South-western India.
  • indicus (Hodgson, 1836)   -  North-central, north-eastern and eastern India and Nepal to southern China, including Hainan, and south to Indochina and Malay Peninsula.
  • formosae Mayr, 1949   -  Taiwan.
  • trivirgatus (Temminck, 1824)   -  Sumatra.
  • niasensis Mayr, 1949   -  Nias I (off western Sumatra).
  • javanicus Mayr, 1949   -  Java; recently recorded on Bali.
  • microstictus Mayr, 1949   -  Borneo.
  • palawanus Mayr, 1949   -  Palawan, Calamianes (south-western Philippines); may also be subspecies of Natuna Is (off western Borneo).
  • extimus Mayr, 1945   -  South-eastern Philippines.
  • castroi Manuel & Gilliard, 1952   -  Polillo Is, off eastern Luzon (northern Philippines).
