Habitat
Open country, including grasslands, savanna and subdesert thornbush. From sea-level - 3,000 m. occasionally to 4,500 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia (B), Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Yemen (B) (NB), Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Iraq, Israel, Lesotho, Liberia, Tunisia.

Senegambia east to Sudan and Ethiopia then south to Namibia and South Africa.
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 100,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Poisoning, pesticides, trapping for international trade, nest disturbance from spreading human settlements, and increased intensification and degradation of agricultural land, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Monotypic genus. Several features of morphology, in addition to juvenile plumage and feeding habits, indicate links with Circaetus.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Shape is unmistakable but Jackal Buzzard (Buteo rufofuscus) and Augur Buzzard (Buteo augur) share a combination of black, white and chestnut plumage.
