Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata ), African Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda cuculoides ) and Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda madagascariensis ). Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata ), Jerdon's Baza (Aviceda jerdoni ), African Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda cuculoides ) and Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda madagascariensis ) sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
ceylonensis (Legge, 1876) - South-western India and Sri Lanka.
jerdoni (Blyth, 1842) - North-eastern India through Burma, southern China (south-western Yunnan, Hainan), Thailand and parts of Indochina to northern Malay Peninsula; some movement southern for winter.
borneensis (Brüggemann, 1876) - Borneo.
magnirostris (Kaup, 1847) - Philippines.
celebensis (Schlegel, 1873) - Sulawesi, Banggai Is and Sula Is.
