Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna, plantations. From sea-level - 3,000 m.
Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi (B), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea (B), Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Botswana.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Madagascar Cuckoo-hawk (Aviceda madagascariensis), and possibly also with Jerdon's Baza (Aviceda jerdoni) and Pacific Baza (Aviceda subcristata).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- cuculoides Swainson, 1837 - Woodland from Senegal east to south-western Ethiopia and south to Nigeria and northern Zaire.
- batesi (Swann, 1920) - Lowland rain forest from Sierra Leone east to eastern Uganda and south to northern Angola.
- verreauxii Lafresnaye, 1846 - Woodland and coastal, riparian and montane forest from Kenya south to northern Namibia and South Africa.
