Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Cream-coloured Courser (Cursorius cursor), Burchell's Courser (Cursorius rufus) and Indian Courser (Cursorius coromandelicus), although present species partly allopatric with the first two taxa, which may therefore represent a separate superspecies. Occasionally treated as a subspecies of Indian Courser (Cursorius coromandelicus).

Possible subspecies damarensis from south-west of range and ruvanensis from east of range poorly defined and not usually recognized, though slight differences in upperpart coloration and apparently different migration strategies may indicate their validity.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • temminckii Swainson, 1822   -  Savanna of sub-Saharan Africa to northern South Africa.
  • ruvanensis Mádarasz, 1915   -  Tanzania to Angola, Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa.
  • aridus Clancey, 1989   -  Northern Namibia to western Zimbabwe.
