Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Rwanda, Sudan.

Subspecies
Subspecies emini may be better merged with nominate cinctus.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

cinctus (Heuglin, 1863) - South-eastern Sudan, eastern Ethiopia, Somalia and northern Kenya.
emini Zedlitz, 1914 - Southern Kenya, Tanzania and northern Zambia.
seebohmi Sharpe, 1893 - Extreme southern Angola and northern Namibia to southern Zambia, Zimbabwe and extreme northern South Africa; possibly also northern Malawi.
mayaudi (�rard, Hemery & Pasquet, 1993) - Ethiopia, northern Somalia.
balsaci (�rard, Hemery & Pasquet, 1993) - Southern Somalia, north-eastern Kenya.
