Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, hot desert. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zimbabwe.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • raffertyi Mearns, 1915   -  Eastern Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti.
  • hartingi Sharpe, 1893   -  South-eastern Ethiopia (Ogaden) and Somalia.
  • gracilis (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884)   -  Tanzania and Kenya.
  • bisignatus (Hartlaub, 1865)   -  South-western Angola.
  • traylori Irwin, 1963   -  Etosha region of Namibia to Makgadikgadi system of Botswana.
  • sharpei (Erlanger, 1905)   -  Central Namibia.
  • africanus (Temminck, 1807)   -  South-western and central Kalahari, northern Cape Province and southern Namibia.
  • granti Sclater, WL, 1921   -  Western Cape Province and Karoo.
  • erlangeri Niethammer & Wolters, 1966   -  North-western Namibia.
