The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

raffertyi Mearns, 1915 - Eastern Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti.
hartingi Sharpe, 1893 - South-eastern Ethiopia (Ogaden) and Somalia.
gracilis (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884) - Tanzania and Kenya.
bisignatus (Hartlaub, 1865) - South-western Angola.
traylori Irwin, 1963 - Etosha region of Namibia to Makgadikgadi system of Botswana.
sharpei (Erlanger, 1905) - Central Namibia.
africanus (Temminck, 1807) - South-western and central Kalahari, northern Cape Province and southern Namibia.
granti Sclater, WL, 1921 - Western Cape Province and Karoo.
erlangeri Niethammer & Wolters, 1966 - North-western Namibia.
