Estimated population is 8,900,000 - 9,800,000 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat loss and degradation due to wetland drainage, hunting and poisoning are the main threats. It is also susceptible to avian influenza.

Habits
In pairs or flocks.

Food
Mainly aquatic plants and animals. Some invertebrates.

Voice
An abrupt, 'krek'. A sharp, 'krik' and a grating, sharp, 'kiek-kiek-kiek'. A loud, repetitive 'kowk' and an explosive, shrill 'pitt'.

Nest
Open, bulky, platform composed of aquatic plants and lined with sheaths and leaves of reeds, in a group of reeds or on top of a low bush growing in water.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 15; slightly glossy, sandy-grey to bright clay, thickly and uniformly covered with grey-violet speckles and spots; oval; about 52 x 35 mm. Incubation: 21 - 26 days; by both sexes.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), Caribbean Coot (Fulica caribaea), Andean Coot (Fulica ardesiaca), Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata), American Coot (Fulica americana) and White-winged Coot (Fulica leucoptera).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • atra Linnaeus, 1758   -  Europe, northern Africa, Azores and Canaries eastern through central Asia to Japan and south to Indian Subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Winters south to western and north-eastern Africa, south-eastern Asia and Philippines.
  • australis Gould, 1845   -  Australia and New Zealand.
  • novaeguineae Rand, 1940   -  Central New Guinea.
  • lugubris Müller, S, 1847   -  Java to north-western New Guinea.
