Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Algeria, Comoros, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Italy, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Morocco, Rwanda, Seychelles.

Northern Ivory Coast patchily east to Cameroon and south to coastal Congo; more continuously from eastern Zaire to Kenya, southern and west to Zimbabwe and extreme south-eastern Angola; scattered localities in South Africa, where may breed in wet years.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 25,000 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat loss as a result of overgrazing and the damming, draining and cultivation of seasonal and ephemeral wetlands.

Nest
A shallow bowl or platform of vegetation, typically constructed 10 - 25 cm above the water in a tuft of grass, or occasionally floating or positioned above damp ground. Sometimes a false nest is built which is abandoned before completion.
