Uncommon.

Habitat
Vegetated swamps and wetlands. Fresh and saline coastal and terrestrial wetlands, swamps, creeks, rivers, still pools, flooded areas, lakes, dams and sewerage ponds.

Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia (B), Fiji, Guam (E) (B), Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Micronesia [Federated States of] (B), New Caledonia, Palau (B), Papua New Guinea, Philippines (B), Samoa, Singapore (B), Solomon Islands, Thailand, Timor-Leste (B) (NB), Vanuatu.

Vagrant to Hong Kong (China), Marshall Islands.

Habits
Singly, in pairs or family groups.

Food
Leaves, seeds, slugs, worms and insects.

Voice
A chattering, cry, 'chika-chika-chika', repeated rapidly. A sharp, loud 'kekro' uttered spasmodically while feeding. A quiet 'charr-r, charr-r' uttered in alarm.

Mainly January - May but also recorded in September - November in northern Queensland.

Nest
A platform composed of rushes or coarse grass and other herbage, lined with grass and finer materials, on the ground or over water, in swampy vegetation.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 8, usually 5 or 6; glossy, olive-brown marked all over with fine darker specks; oval; about 28 x 20 mm. Incubation: about 21 days; by both sexes.
