Dense tropical rain-forests bordering creeks on or the sides of stony ridges.

Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Habits
Singly or in pairs.

Food
Insects, snails and other freshwater animals.

Voice
Noisy and partly nocturnal, giving a loud, 'gurk'. Also a 'clock, clock', repeated several times. Curious grunting notes.

November - April but mainly January - March.

Nest
A hole scooped in the ground, lined with a few dead leaves, usually located at the foot of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 7, usually 5; glossy, white, soon becoming discolored; rounded-oval; about 30 x 28 mm. Incubation: 18 - 22 days; mainly by female.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
Others recognize subspecies victa, Kur, Damar and Tanimbar Islands, and St. Mathias Island in the Bismarck Archipelago and convicta, New Ireland and New Hanover Islands.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Adult Red-legged Crake (Rallina fasciata) is markedly smaller, with a shorter, heavier bill and longer legs.
