Habitat
Dense, lush grass and other vegetation, in areas with shallow mud and water, including savanna in lowland forest, grassy marshes in savanna and along lake shores, rank grass and sedge along wet drainage lines in miombo woodland, open secondary growth, moist post-cultivation.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Cameroon, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Gabon, Rwanda, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia.

Vagrant to Malawi.

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Coturnicops.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lugens (B�hm, 1884) - Cameroon to Zaire, Rwanda and western Tanzania.
lynesi Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1934 - Central Angola and Zambia.
