Habitat
Breeds in the wetlands of steppe and forest-steppe zones, in grassy marshes, wet sedge-meadows and reedbeds in broad river valleys, lake depressions and boggy upland wetlands. Winters on freshwater lakes, farmland and occasionally coastal flats.
China (mainland) (B) (NB), Japan (NB), Mongolia (B), North Korea (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (NB).
Vagrant to Kazakhstan, Russia (Central Asian), Taiwan (China) (NB).
North-eastern Mongolia, north-eastern China and extreme south-eastern Russia. Winters in Korea, southern Japan and central-eastern China, along middle and lower R Yangtze.
