Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, temperate grassland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,500 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Mauritania.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Hartlaub's Bustard (Lissotis hartlaubii).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • melanogaster (Rüppell, 1835)   -  Africa south of Sahel south to R Zambezi and southern Angola; absent from regions of heavy forest and from most of Horn of Africa.
  • notophila Oberholser, 1905   -  Zimbabwe and Mozambique south of R Zambezi to extreme eastern South Africa and Swaziland.
