Habitat
Open, fairly short grassland and a mixture of grassland and karoo dwarf-shrubland, with termite mounds and few or no trees, old and fallow cropland, pastures and winter cultivation.
South Africa in eastern Cape, Orange Free State, western Natal and southern Transvaal (eastern and central Highveld); also Lesotho.

Population
Estimated population is 12,000 - 15,000 (2010).
Status NT
Human settlement and habitat loss through large-scale agriculture are the main threats.
