Range (Guide)
Australia (B) (NB), Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

Australia, in all states, but generally rarer or absent in southern and especially in SE; also southern Papua New Guinea in the Trans-Fly, ranging western into Irian Jaya.

Formerly throughtout mainland Australia, extending to coastal areas north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Now rare or absent from most of southern Australia.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 99,999 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat loss and degradation due to intensive agriculture, invasive weeds, changes to fire regimes and predation by the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) are the main threats.

Food
Insects, mainly grasshoppers, snakes, lizards, small mammals and birds, frogs, spiders, grass and green herbage, also fruits and berries.

Voice
Croaks while feeding. Hoarse bark in alarm.

August - November in south, throughout the year in the north.

Nest
None made. Eggs are laid on the bare ground, sheltered by tall grass or a low bush.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 1, occasionally 2; olive-brown to light olive-green, with irregular spots and blotches of olive-brown; oval; about 78 x 55 mm. Incubation: by female.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps). Superspecies sometimes considered to include Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori), as well as Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps), and all three have even been lumped into single species, Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori). All four Ardeotis have occasionally been placed in same superspecies.
