Habitat
Dry and flooded forest, in the lowlands. To 500 m.
Indonesia (B) (NB), Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Declining principly due to hunting as food and for its feathers. Capture for trade may also be a factor.

Habits
Feeds on the ground in flocks of 2 - 20, sometimes as many as 30. Roosts in trees.
Voice
Foraging flocks communicate with a quiet, resonating boom.
Subspecies
Present species probably more closely related to Western Crowned-pigeon (Goura cristata) than to Victoria Crowned-pigeon (Goura victoria).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- sclaterii Salvadori, 1876 - Southern New Guinea from R Mimika east to R Fly. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sclater's Crowned-pigeon (Goura sclaterii).
- scheepmakeri Finsch, 1876 - Southern coast of south-eastern New Guinea from Hall Sound and Mt Epa east to Orangerie Bay.
Similar Species
Hybridises with two parapatric congeners where their ranges meet: Victoria Crowned-pigeon (Goura victoria) which has white tips to crest and less maroon on lower breast, Western Crowned-pigeon (Goura cristata) which has plain grey underparts and maroon mantle and wing-coverts.
