Subspecies
A distinctive form of uncertain affinities. Probably most closely allied to the species-group which includes Orange-bellied Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus iozonus), Knob-billed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus insolitus), Grey-headed Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus hyogastrus) and Carunculated Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus granulifrons). Dwarf Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus nainus) is sometimes included in this group. At least eleven subspecies have been described based on slight differences in size and coloration. Further study needed to establish which, if any, of these forms merit subspecific rank. Has been erroneously listed as Ptilinopus melanocephalus.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • bangueyensis Meyer, AB, 1891   -  Southern Philippines (Palawan, Cagayan Sulu, Mindanao, Basilan, Sulu Is, Tawitawi, Bongao, Sibutu) and islands north of Borneo (Balambangan, Banggi).
  • xanthorrhous (Salvadori, 1875)   -  Talaud and Sangihe Is (north of Sulawesi) and Doi (northern Moluccas).
  • melanospilus (Salvadori, 1875)   -  Sulawesi, Talisei, Bangka, Lembeh and Togian islands.
  • chrysorrhous (Salvadori, 1875)   -  Banggai and Sula Is, and Obi and Seram in central Moluccas.
  • melanauchen (Salvadori, 1875)   -  Matasiri (south of Borneo) and Kangean Is, Java and Bali east through Lesser Sundas to Alor, and islands south of Sulawesi (Salayar, Muna, Butung, Tukangbesi, Tanahjampea, Kalao, Kalaotoa, Madu).
