Subspecies
A member of the large Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) species-group, within which associated with the Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) subgroup; often considered conspecific with Makatea Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus chalcurus) and Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus). Taxonomy of Ptilinopus in south-eastern Polynesia is confused. Present species has often been considered a subspecies of Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus), along with Makatea Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus chalcurus). Other arrangements have considered Makatea Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus chalcurus) and subspecies chrysogaster of Grey-green Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) to be subspecies of the present species.
