Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Leucotreron and a later proposal returned all members of that group to Ptilinopus, but placed present species in subgenus Rhamphiculus along with other Philippine and Sulawesi forms Flame-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus marchei), Cream-bellied Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus merrilli), Yellow-breasted Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus occipitalis), Red-eared Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus fischeri) and Black-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri). Forms a superspecies with Black-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri). Original species name gularis (of Sulawesi) is preoccupied, so subgularis becomes the specific name, as the next oldest available, and epia becomes the name for Sulawesi birds.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • epius (Oberholser, 1918)   -  Sulawesi.
  • subgularis (A. B. Meyer and Wiglesworth, 1896)   -  Banggai Is (Peleng and Banggai). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Banggai Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus subgularis).
  • mangoliensis Rothschild, 1898   -  Sula Is (Mangole and Taliabu). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Sula Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus mangoliensis).
