Subspecies
Madagascar Green-pigeon (Treron australis), African Green-pigeon (Treron calvus), Sao Tome Green-pigeon (Treron sanctithomae) and Pemba Green-pigeon (Treron pembaensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include calvus, sanctithomae and pembaensis as subspecies of Madagascar Green-pigeon (Treron australis). Gender agreement of African Green-pigeon (Treron calvus) follows David and Gosselin (2002b).

With the exception of the more distinct Bruce's Green-pigeon (Treron waalia), the green-pigeons of African mainland and islands form a closely related group, within which species limits have been much debated. Present species sometimes considered a subspecies of Madagascar Green-pigeon (Treron australis) or African Green-pigeon (Treron calvus). However, based on differences in cere colour and on geographical separation of forms, it seems most appropriate to consider present species as forming a superspecies with Madagascar Green-pigeon (Treron australis), African Green-pigeon (Treron calvus) and Sao Tome Green-pigeon (Treron sanctithomae).

No subspecies.
