Subspecies
Affinities unclear. May form a superspecies with Palau Ground-dove (Alopecoenas canifrons), and these two also appear to be related to the White-breasted Ground-dove (Alopecoenas jobiensis) superspecies. Alternatively, may be related to Shy Ground-dove (Alopecoenas stairi) and Santa Cruz Ground-dove (Alopecoenas sanctaecrucis), and more distantly to Palau Ground-dove (Alopecoenas canifrons) and Wetar Ground-dove (Alopecoenas hoedtii).

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • beccarii (Salvadori, 1876)   -  Mountains of New Guinea.
  • johannae (Sclater, PL, 1877)   -  Karkar I, Bismarck Archipelago (except ranges of following two races) and Nissan I (east of southern New Ireland). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Bronze Ground-dove (Alopecoenas johannae).
  • eichhorni (Hartert, 1924)   -  St Matthias Group (Mussau, Emira).
  • admiralitatis (Rothschild & Hartert, 1914)   -  Admiralty Is (Manus).
  • intermedius (Rothschild and Hartert, 1905)   -  Western Solomon Is. (Bougainville, Gizo and New Georgia Group).
  • solomonensis (Ogilvie-Grant, 1888)   -  Eastern Solomon Is (including Rennell).
  • masculinus (Salomonsen, 1972)   -  Nissan Island (western Solomon Islands).
