Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Columbigallina. Closely related to Common Ground-dove (Columbina passerina), the two overlap in range in some areas. Subspecies amazilia doubtfully distinct from nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
interrupta (Griscom, 1929) - Southern Mexico (southern Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Guerrero and locally Jalisco), southern Guatemala and Belize to Nicaragua.
elaeodes (Todd, 1913) - Costa Rica south through eastern Panama and Canal Zone to west-central Colombia.
minuta (Linnaeus, 1766) - Venezuela east to Trinidad and the Guianas, and south through eastern Colombia to Peru (Urubamba Valley), eastern and central Brazil and Bolivia, and on to south-central Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
amazilia (Bonaparte, 1855) - Arid coastal regions of south-western Ecuador and Peru (Lima to Libertad).
