Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Inca Dove (Columbina inca).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

ridgwayi (Richmond, 1896) - Coastal Colombia (south to Vichada) through Venezuela (south to Orinoco Valley, including Margarita I) to French Guiana.
squammata (Lesson, 1831) - Central and eastern Brazil (Pará south to Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul) to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones). Also regular in Bolivia, where status uncertain.
