Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist and dry shrubland, heavily degraded former forest, rural gardens, urban areas. From sea-level - 900 m.

Range (Guide)
British Indian Ocean Territory (B), Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines (B), Singapore (B), Thailand (B).

Introduced to French Polynesia, Laos (B), Madagascar, Mauritius (B), Réunion, Seychelles, St Helena, USA.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Predominantly seeds on the ground.

Subspecies
Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida) is considered a subspecies of Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) by Christidis and Boles (1994).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • striata (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  South-eastern Asia, from southern Burma and Malay Peninsula, through Philippines, Borneo, Sumatra, Java and Lesser Sundas to Lombok.
  • placida Gould, 1844   -  Northern and eastern Australia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida).
  • clelandi Mathews, 1912   -  Pilbara Region from De Grey River to Murchison district, WA, Australia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida).
  • maugeus (Temminck, 1811)   -  South-eastern Moluccas and Lesser Sundas. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Barred Dove (Geopelia maugeus).
  • papua Rand, 1942   -  Southern New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Peaceful Dove (Geopelia placida).
  • audacia Hartet & Goodson, 1918   -  Tanimbar and Kai Islands and nearby islands.
