Treeless grass plains.

Western Queensland and the Barkly Tableland, NT but highly irruptive, and flocks or scattered individuals may occur almost anywhere across the arid north and west of the continent.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status LC
Habitat destruction and degradation due to conversion to agriculture and possibly overgrazing by stock and rabbits are the main threats. Foxes appear to have a disastrous effect on the population, with irruptive flocks not persisting where the fox is present.

Probably secure.

Habits
Often in large flocks of hundreds or thousands.

Food
Seeds of grasses and herbaceous plants.

Voice
A soft, low, drawn-out moaning at even pitch and volume uttered by feeding flocks. A 'wook' uttered in display. Silent in flight and when at water.

Nest
On bare ground, in the shelter of a tussock or low bush.

Eggs (Guide)
2; glossy, white or cream; oval; about 33 x 25 mm. Incubation: 16 days; male alternating with female by day and night.

Young
Fledge in about 7 days in captivity, probably longer in wild.

Subspecies
Populations of north and west formerly awarded separate subspecies, alisteri.

No subspecies.
