Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, temperate grassland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Vagrant to Burundi, Cyprus, Kuwait, Morocco (B), Sierra Leone.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • capensis (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Sub-Saharan Africa, Socotra and Arabia; recently established in Israel.
  • aliena Bangs, 1918   -  Madagascar.
